David Fowler is not a hot-take account: 18 years at Microsoft, co-creator of SignalR, founding developer on NuGet and Kudu, a core ASP.NET Core contributor. When he posted three words on September 3 — "Typing code is absolutely over." — they traveled: 2,892 likes, ~200 retweets, then a Windows Latest analysis arguing he meant it. Windows 11, it reported, is already being built that way.
The post and the split replies
Fowler's point, as Windows Latest frames it, is narrower than the slogan: he isn't saying developers will stop reading code, or that software engineering is done — only that manually typing code line by line in an editor is becoming the least interesting part of the job. The replies were immediate. Developers who already work this way shrugged in agreement — "Not yet friend... Way less slop this way," answered JB Bouhier. Skeptics reached for analogies: "we still drive stick shifts," wrote KGDanie. A third camp read it as a career threat, one reply accusing a bunch of nerds of wrecking everyone's career paths. On Reddit it left the AI bubbles: roughly 350 points on r/singularity and 1,800-plus votes on an r/pcmasterrace crosspost.
A roadmap, not a rant
The connection is Aspire: Fowler leads the distributed-app toolchain, now being rebuilt around AI-based development — 13.1 made AI coding assistants first-class, 13.2 added agent-friendly CLI and MCP support. His team wrote in April that AI agents are "really good at writing code," but generating code and shipping a full working app "are very different things" — so the agents start services, read logs, inspect telemetry, restart broken pieces and test again. Nadella puts AI-written code at Microsoft at 20-30%; security runs MDASH, an agentic vulnerability scanner spanning Windows, Azure and identity. Days later, on September 4, came Project Zenith: a developer-tuned Windows 11 build with 64GB of unified RAM and 250GB/s memory bandwidth for 30B+ parameter local models on AMD Ryzen AI Halo chips. Windows Latest's framing: Windows beyond Copilot buttons — WinUI 3 open-sourced, AI-assisted fixes in security updates.
The skeptical reading
Start with the incentive: the engineer declaring typing over leads the team whose product is being rebuilt around agents — the statement doubles as product positioning, and Microsoft's own numbers are more modest. If 20-30% of code is AI-written, 70-80% still is not. The counterweight nobody in the threads quoted: Veracode's 2026 GenAI Code Security Report found about 44% of tested AI code-generation tasks produced code with a known vulnerability. Typing was never the whole job — architecture, review, debugging, security and dependency management survive no matter who produces the keystrokes. The pattern has run before: AI pair programmers in 2016, GitHub Copilot in 2023 — neither ended manual coding. The difference from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's 90%-of-code prediction is the tense: he bet on the future, Fowler claims the present. That makes it harder to dismiss — and easier to test against what ships. The replies came instantly; the results have not.
