r/LocalLLaMA turns on LM Studio: the Bionic funnel hides the app they came for
LM Studio's own site now sells Bionic, a separate agent app, before the local runner — and r/LocalLLaMA spent the week arguing about the download button.

Local-model users spent this week arguing about a download button. On September 9, an r/LocalLLaMA thread by u/Porespellar — "Why the hell is LM Studio making LM Studio so difficult to download?" — became the subreddit's grievance of the day, drawing roughly 540 points and more than 180 comments. The complaint was not that LM Studio stopped running local models. It is that the company's own website no longer treats the namesake local runner as the main event.
The funnel, not the failure
Visit lmstudio.ai and the landing page now sells Bionic, the separate agent app LM Studio launched on July 16 as "the AI agent made for open models." Bionic handles coding, research and document work; it can run local models, connect through LM Link, or reach "the largest frontier open source models through LM Studio Secure Cloud" — a route that requires an LM Studio account and billing. LM Studio's own blog is explicit that "Bionic is a new, separate app from LM Studio," and that advanced low-level configuration still lives in the original product.
That distinction is the whole fight. Bionic runs local weights; the distribution does not lead there. u/Porespellar put it bluntly: "Who is the marketing genius at LM Studio that decided that going ALL IN on pushing their new Bionic Agent product meant they are going to make it a giant pain in the ass to find and download actual LM Studio." A second line asked for the obvious fix — "Here's a thought LM Studio, maybe stop redirecting me to something I don't want to download when I'm trying to find your actual namesake product."
Why the timing matters
Bionic is roughly two months old. This is not a launch-day revolt; it is the delayed one. Distribution complaints arrive when a change starts costing users time, which is why the same week produced sibling threads titled "LM Studio Bionic is unusable because of its name," "Is LM Studio abandoning their core product?" and "LMStudio Bionic will not write to local disk." The pattern echoes the Ollama licensing fight from two days earlier: both arguments are about who controls the runner layer, and both read a business decision as a statement about the users who built the audience.
Nothing in the thread shows local inference being removed — that reading is the community's. What the funnel signals is a company monetizing agents and cloud while the free local runner becomes the side door — a strategic shift, not a technical failure.
What's next
Two things would settle it: whether LM Studio restores a direct download path to the classic app on its landing page, and whether the cloud and account requirements stay genuinely optional. Until then, the argument will keep landing on first impressions, not on the models.
