On September 11, Terence Tao published a declaration titled "A Severe Misalignment of AI in Mathematics" and described himself as "proud to be among the list of 25 initial signatories — all Fields Medallists." There is no institution, no committee and no press office behind it: the text sits on a plain page at mathandai.org, which asks for more signatures. The argument it makes is narrow enough to state in one sentence, and uncomfortable for every lab currently funding mathematics as a benchmark.

A statement written in a week

The declaration did not come out of a society or a funded initiative. Tao says it "grew out of discussions between ourselves over the last week," and he is candid about what that speed cost. The Leiden declaration on AI and mathematics, a slower and more consultative document, took a wider group far longer to draft. The medallists skipped that stage because, in Tao's words, "the urgency of the situation was such that we needed to release a statement sooner rather than later."

His blog post doubles as the announcement channel. It links a same-day Economist report on mathematicians' anger at OpenAI's methods and a short video interview with signatory James Maynard. By the following day the post had collected 66 likes and 175 comments, modest numbers that say something about where this particular argument is actually being read. The signatory count is already being reported inconsistently: a widely shared Reddit thread framed the group as "24 Fields Medal winners," while Tao's post and mathandai.org both say 25. Neither has corrected the other, and this piece does not resolve it either.

The argument in the declaration's own words

Strip out the venue and the medals and the text makes a structural claim rather than a technological one:

"The push by AI companies to solve mathematical problems as a benchmark is detrimental to the science of mathematics, and to the mathematical community. The goals of the AI companies and the goals of the mathematical community are severely misaligned."

The signatories are not arguing that models cannot do mathematics, but about what a solved problem is worth. Solving problems, in their framing, "is only a tool and proxy for achieving the primary goal of conceptual understanding and insight," and the danger of automation is volume: "the mass production at faster and faster pace of 'true/false' statements could destroy fertile ground instead of breathing life into new ideas."

Two passages carry the practical weight. On credit, solutions are "announced in a rush, leaving no time for a proper writeup, the isolation of new methods and ideas, and citing relevant previous work of others. As in all creative professions, this raises severe attribution and plagiarism questions." On people, "without the willing mathematicians who must take care of their development and integration into the mathematical canon, AI-conceived ideas would never become fully alive and the crucial human transmission chain between mathematicians would be lost." The closing line widens the target to intellectual work generally, naming "misalignment between the outcome of the use of AI and its initial purpose."

Who signed

The initial list is entirely medallists, and it spans five decades of the award:

  • 1978-1998: Deligne, Donaldson, Mori, Lions, Zelmanov, Kontsevich, McMullen
  • 2006-2010: Okounkov, Tao, Werner, Lindenstrauss, Ngô Bảo Châu, Smirnov, Villani
  • 2014-2018: Avila, Bhargava, Hairer, Birkar, Figalli, Scholze
  • 2022: Duminil-Copin, Huh, Maynard, Viazovska
  • 2026: Deng

The spread matters to how the document reads. Fields Medals are awarded every four years to at most four mathematicians under 40, so the list runs from Pierre Deligne's 1978 medal to Yu Deng's, awarded this year. Seven of the 25 won before 2000, which makes the group senior in aggregate but not a retirement committee: Maynard and Deng were honoured within the last four years and are still building careers in the field the declaration says is at risk. That the first signatories are all laureates of one prize is also the declaration's obvious structural weakness. Its breadth depends on the open invitation on the page, and on who accepts it.

The fight over one word

The Hacker News thread, submitted by user meredydd, reached 1,172 points and 1,124 comments, and a large share of it was vocabulary rather than substance. One self-identified mathematician, tmhn2, argued the declaration is too pessimistic about what happens to incomprehensible mathematics, pointing to the Mochizuki abc-conjecture affair: a proof almost nobody could read still generated conferences, talks and student work, so the damage the declaration predicts may be overstated. GPerson replied that the top comment "absolutely misrepresents the actual declaration. The declaration is not making any statements about not using any AI in mathematics" — on that reading the aim is not prohibition but steering the technology toward values the community already holds.

A separate argument ran over the title itself. zozbot234 said the signatories misuse "misalignment" for what is really a capability gap, a term borrowed from the safety literature where it means something more specific. freehorse answered that the letter is about the goals of AI companies, not about evil superintelligences, which is a reasonable reading of the text: the word appears in the declaration's second sentence attached to company incentives, not to model behaviour.

The week it landed in

The declaration arrived at the end of an unusual fortnight. On September 8 OpenAI said a model had settled Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness, a Clay Millennium problem, and NYU's Tristan Buckmaster said his Codex conversations may have fed it (our analysis of the claim and the dispute that followed). Andreas Thom then accused OpenAI of dishonesty over how it answered his questions about his own ChatGPT conversations. The same day, Caltech mathematicians asked organizers to cancel the Mathathon, an AI-assisted hackathon funded with industry credits, and OpenAI withdrew its sponsorship within a day. The declaration states the same argument at the top of the field, by the people least dependent on lab funding to make it, and sits beside Dario Amodei's case about pacing the frontier, which starts from similar premises about speed outrunning understanding and reaches different conclusions about who should slow down.

The wider reaction was thinner. The second-most-upvoted r/singularity post that day, at roughly 2,150 points and more than 110 comments, was a screenshot captioned as a joke about great minds moving on to better things, built around a quote attributed to Deng about a backup plan of writing a yuri novel if AI solves all mathematics. It is an image, not a source, and the quote is unconfirmed: the engagement measures appetite for jokes about the death of mathematics, not evidence about the declaration.

What would settle it

Little here is falsifiable as written. The declaration is a statement of goals with no data, so testing it means years of watching the things it names: whether citations to prior work hold up in AI-assisted results, whether methods get written up and taught, whether the checking lands on people who never agreed to do it. The Leiden declaration's slow route produced wider buy-in; the medallists traded that for speed and must earn it afterward.

Three things are worth watching. Whether the signature list grows past the medallist circle, the only mechanism the page offers for turning an elite statement into a community position. Whether the labs answer the specific attribution charges rather than the tone. And whether benchmark-driven funding changes shape at all: the Mathathon organizers already restructured their rules under pressure once, which suggests the demand is not immovable.

The practical read: the most credentialed possible group of mathematicians has said on the record that the two sets of goals have come apart, and has done it without a single number. That is a signal about sentiment, not a result — the kind that tends to precede changes in norms rather than benchmarks, which is exactly the timescale the declaration says it is worried about.
