On August 30, a screenshot of Framework's product page drew roughly 420 points and more than 140 comments on r/LocalLLaMA: "It's official! 192GB Framework." The machine in question is a desktop, not a laptop — Framework's 4.5-liter mini PC is gaining a 192GB unified-memory configuration built around AMD's Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 495, aimed squarely at local inference.

What Happened

Framework teased the SKU last week at AMD's Advancing AI event, then formalized it with a "192GB coming soon" tab on the Desktop product page. The configuration pairs the new Gorgon Halo APU — 16 Zen 5 cores with a 40-CU Radeon 8065S — with 192GB of LPDDR5X at 8533 MT/s, 131 TOPS of combined AI compute, and an open-end x4 PCIe slot that Framework says exists so owners can add 50Gbps NICs and cluster several units. Linux comes as an option. The pitch: run very large models, such as the 284B-parameter DeepSeek-V4-Flash, in a single box.

Why the Skepticism Is Warranted

Capacity is not bandwidth, and the 192GB number buys room for bigger models, not faster tokens. The new SKU rides the same 256-bit memory bus as the existing 128GB model, so throughput rises only about 6.6 percent. At 273GB/s, the machine sits at roughly the bandwidth of an M4 Pro Mac mini — while Apple's M5 Ultra Mac Studio, covered here last week, offers up to 512GB at 1.2TB/s, more than four times the data rate.

The thread's own commenters make the case. One notes the bandwidth matches an M4 Pro Mac mini; another calls the Desktop a fine little Linux box "but not a great choice for inference." The 128GB SKU already runs 70B-class models like Llama 3.3 per Framework and reviewers, so 192GB is really about 200B-plus models — and there, token speed will be capped by that 256-bit pipe. Framework itself hedges: with DRAM prices climbing, it recommends buying the 64GB or 128GB config now if it fits the models you need.

What's Next

Framework promises details later this year, with no price set. If the community's $4.5k mainboard guess holds, a full system lands near a 128GB Mac Studio — where the buyer gets 4.4x the bandwidth instead of 64GB more RAM. Independent benchmarks will settle what 273GB/s actually delivers in tokens per second. Until then, treat 192GB as a capacity milestone, not a speed record.
