GPT-6 Astra reaches ChatGPT Plus — just not in regular chat

GPT-6 Astra has started reaching the $20 ChatGPT Plus tier, five days after the model's debut — with asterisks attached. Subscribers are gaining access through ChatGPT Work and Codex, but Astra is not currently included in regular Chat for the tier, and users are asking OpenAI why.

What Happened

OpenAI's September 3 launch post said Astra "will become available to all ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users" over the coming days. What arrived from September 5 is narrower and tiered. Pro, Enterprise, and Business Premium plans received Astra through ChatGPT Work and Codex first, plus Astra Pro, the more capable variant offered in standard Chat as GPT-6 Pro. Chat allowances, per The Decoder's September 5 report:

• Pro $200: 200 messages per week; Pro $100 and Business Premium: 50 per week; Business Standard: 15 per month

Then the $20 tier. Digital Trends reports that Plus subscribers can now pick Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex, with availability gradual. Usage draws on the existing Plus allowance, with extras purchasable via credits. Regular Chat on Plus still tops out at GPT-5.6 Sol.

Pace is the second asterisk. OpenAI's pricing documentation, as relayed by The Decoder, puts standard Astra at roughly half of Sol's allowance per five-hour window on every plan: an estimated 5-45 Astra messages for Plus against 10-100 for Sol, and 100-900 against 200-2,000 on the Pro 20x tier. Free and Go users get neither Astra nor Sol.

Why This Matters

The confusion is documented in both places OpenAI watches. On r/ChatGPT, a PSA warns the Plus tier is "NOT getting GPT-6 Astra in regular Chat." On OpenAI's forum, "Clarification Needed" walks through the mismatch: the launch promised the model to all Plus users, while the help center grants GPT-6 Pro in standard Chat only to Pro $100, Pro $200, Business, and Enterprise — Plus gets Astra in Work and Codex. It drew more than 9,000 views in its first days.

Staged rollouts are routine, and OpenAI did say "over the coming days." The open question is whether Work-and-Codex access is staging or the permanent shape of the Plus deal — the help center reads as if Astra in regular Chat is not coming to $20 subscribers. The irony: Astra is built for long agentic tasks, so Work and Codex may be where it belongs, while the conversations Plus users actually live in stay on Sol. And the half-rate figures are OpenAI's own estimates — real limits will only show once the rollout completes.

What's Next

OpenAI has not said whether Astra will reach regular Chat on Plus or free users — free users never received Sol, getting the lighter Luna about a month later instead. If Work-and-Codex access is the final shape of the Plus tier, the launch copy that promised the model to all ChatGPT Plus users needs an update.
