Unitree says its G1 robot can fight autonomously — no human, no script
Unitree says its UnifoLM-X2-1.0 world model lets a G1 humanoid spar on its own — no teleoperation, no scripts. The evidence so far is a 39-second video.

Unitree Robotics unveiled UnifoLM-X2-1.0 on September 7, a "world-action foundation model" the company says lets a humanoid robot fight with no human at the controls. The Hangzhou-based maker accompanied it with a 39-second video of its G1 humanoid sparring in a ring, calling it the world's first fully autonomous humanoid robot combat. The clip spread fast: an r/singularity thread titled "Unitree's UnifoLM-X2-1.0 reads the opponent, predicts the next move and reacts instantly" had gathered roughly 300 upvotes by early this week.
What Unitree is claiming
According to the official announcement, UnifoLM-X2-1.0 predicts future physical states in real time and plans movements on the fly — no teleoperation, no scripted choreography. Unitree says it breaks the usual bottlenecks of world-action foundation models: instant planning at millisecond timescales, tactical decisions against a moving opponent, and closed-loop execution under high-force contact. In the demo video, the G1 slips strikes, adjusts its footwork and lands straight punches and body kicks on a padded trainer.

UnifoLM-X2-1.0 extends Unitree's earlier open-source work: the UnifoLM-WMA-0 precursor, a video-diffusion world model with an action head, has been on GitHub since September 2025. Independent coverage was quick to flag what the announcement lacks — AlphaSignal's breakdown notes there is no paper, no latency figure, no benchmarks, and no word on whether X2-1.0 will be open-sourced like its predecessor.
What the video does — and doesn't — prove
The clip is the entire evidence package. There is no telemetry, no third-party verification, and the opponent is a compliant trainer in body shields offering predictable targets, not an adversary trying to knock the robot down. Whether the bout ran fully autonomous in real time, or reflects cherry-picked takes from many attempts, cannot be established from a single 39-second edit. Earlier robot-versus-robot exhibition bouts leaned on remote pilots, so only Unitree attests to this leap.
Why it matters
Unitree brings real momentum to the claim: more than 18,000 humanoids shipped by July 2026, a profitable balance sheet and a roughly US$905 million Shanghai STAR Market IPO in August. Yet weeks before this demo, CEO Wang Xingxing told the World Robot Conference that humanoids are still not ready to scale in factories. Fighting is a more forgiving proof than factory work — and a more marketable one. The underlying bet — one world model predicting the next seconds of physics to drive real-time control — is the same one DeepMind, Nvidia and 1X are making. But as with last week's viral robot-running clip, the standard is unchanged: publish training details, let third parties run repeated trials, then judge. Until Unitree shows its work, "reads the opponent" is a headline, not a result.
