An anonymous X account says AGI has 'essentially arrived' inside OpenAI and Anthropic

An anonymous X account with no disclosed sourcing says AGI "has essentially arrived" inside OpenAI and Anthropic, and that the public is months, not years, from using it. Neither lab has confirmed any part of that, and no named employee at either company has said anything of the kind on the record.

The claim

The post came from @synthwavedd, an aggregator account describing itself as a "tech, ai & politics nerd." Published on September 12 at 21:06 UTC, it rests entirely on "conversations with people at and around both labs" — unnamed, uncounted and unverifiable. It names no source, shows no document and gives no timeline. It also warns that if the United States slows its frontier work it "cedes ground to China," then closes: "the decisions made over the next twelve months will be studied for decades to come."

Twenty-three minutes later, r/singularity user u/Neurogence reposted it as "AGI Has Essentially Arrived, Just Not Publicly", where it drew roughly 1,140 points and 616 comments. The Reddit version added a speculation of its own, tying the alleged "existential crises" to OpenAI's unreleased model that the company said produced a Navier-Stokes proof.

The pushback

Niels Rogge, a machine-learning engineer at Hugging Face with 23,037 followers, answered 21 minutes after the original: "Do not fall for this kind of crap."

Reaction split roughly three ways. Some read it as institutional panic, with u/KubeCommander calling it "more bullshit fearmongering to try and get the public to support banning of open models." Others mocked the audience rather than the claim; u/Mr_Pastee wrote that when he sees "all the morons in this sub upvoting 'news' from random twitter accounts," he realizes AI "already has" exceeded human intelligence. And u/AladdiX offered the sympathetic case: "People at the frontier are bound to stare into the abyss first... and it does stare back."

What the record actually shows

This lands at the end of a fortnight of on-record safety statements. Anthropic pre-training researcher Jacob Coxon resigned on September 9, saying the labs are "gambling with our lives", and on September 12 Dario Amodei published an essay urging the frontier to be paced, which Elon Musk and Sam Altman answered within hours. Those events have names, dates and documents attached. The anonymous claim about "existential crises" has none — which is the whole problem with it.

What would settle it

Three things would: labs saying on the record that internal capability has crossed a threshold, a model shipping, or independent third-party evaluation. Until one of those appears, a liked post is not evidence that AGI is sitting behind a login page.
