Twelve new hires a day, every working day, for the rest of the year. That's roughly what OpenAI needs to pull off to hit its target of 8,000 employees by the end of 2026 — nearly double its current headcount of 4,500, according to a Financial Times report published last week.
The Anthropic Factor
The hiring surge isn't happening in a vacuum. The FT specifically framed it as OpenAI's attempt to "close the gap with rival Anthropic." Data from Ramp, a fintech firm that tracks corporate AI spending, backs this up: businesses are now 70% more likely to choose Anthropic when buying AI services for the first time compared to OpenAI.
That's a remarkable shift for a company valued at $730 billion. OpenAI's new hires will span engineering, research, product development, and sales, with a new emphasis on "technical ambassadorship" — specialists who help enterprises actually use AI tools, rather than just buy them.
The expansion comes against a backdrop of industry-wide layoffs. Amazon, Salesforce, Meta, Ericsson, and Oracle have all cut staff recently, often citing efficiency gains from automation. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has pushed back on that framing, suggesting some companies are "AI washing" — using artificial intelligence as a convenient excuse for cuts they were already planning.
What OpenAI Is Building Toward
Beyond headcount, OpenAI has been making aggressive moves. A defense contract with the Pentagon landed in February after Anthropic's public fallout with the agency. Advanced talks with Brookfield Asset Management and other private equity firms could embed OpenAI tools across entire portfolios of companies. And GPT-5.4, the company's latest flagship, continues to compete at the frontier alongside Claude Opus 4.6 and Gemini 3.1 Pro.
The message is clear: OpenAI isn't just scaling its models — it's scaling the organization around them. Whether 8,000 employees can outmaneuver Anthropic's leaner operation is the billion-dollar question of 2026.
