Nvidia's RTX 5090 Has Left First-Party Retail. The Fallback Is a $10,850 Bundle
Nvidia's RTX 5090 has disappeared from US online retail, and the pallet photos suggest why. Street prices now run from $4,399 to a $10,849.96 Newegg bundle.

The RTX 5090 has not vanished from the United States, but it has vanished from the way most people buy graphics cards. Filter Newegg's catalogue for RTX 5090 products that are both in stock and sold by Newegg itself, rather than by a marketplace reseller, and the result is two ASUS bundles and zero standalone cards. The cheaper of the two — a ROG Astral RTX 5090 Edition 20 paired with a motherboard, a 3000W power supply and a case — costs $10,849.96. NVIDIA still lists the Founders Edition at $1,999. A link post to the Tom's Hardware story on r/LocalLLaMA drew roughly 900 points and more than 230 comments in a day.
The storefront stopped selling the card
What VideoCardz found on September 15 is not a shortage of listings but a shortage of first-party ones. Marketplace sellers still offer 5090s. Newegg itself does not, unless the GPU arrives attached to other components. The outlet's reading of its own screenshot is that the $10,850 bundle "is starting to look competitive against current marketplace prices" — which is the state of this market expressed as one sentence.
It is worth being precise about what has not changed. The card has not disappeared from the entire US market: Micro Center still lists several models at roughly $4,399 to $5,300, with availability varying by store and sales limited to in-store pickup. The Founders Edition page still says $1,999, which VideoCardz suggests reflects nothing more than an un-updated page. And no NVIDIA statement on allocation exists. Every explanation for why supply moved, including the one in the next section, is inference drawn from retail evidence rather than from a disclosed policy.
What the street actually charges
The spread between the cheapest and the most expensive way to buy one card now exceeds $6,400.

Two caveats belong on that table. The Best Buy and Micro Center figures are VideoCardz's readings of live listings, not announcements by either retailer. And the $5,999.99 standalone is out of stock, which is why a four-part bundle is the cheapest thing on Newegg that a buyer can actually complete. Tom's Hardware put the ceiling at "as much as $9,500" on September 14; VideoCardz found a $9,659 listing a day later. The two outlets agree on the shape and disagree on the peak, which is what happens when everyone is reading moving listings.
The buyer changed, not the card
Two days before it catalogued those prices, VideoCardz reported something more revealing: pictures from HKEPC that it says were taken at companies assembling AI servers, showing pallets of brand-new retail GeForce RTX 5090 cards being unboxed and installed into multi-GPU systems. Not RTX PRO 6000 data-centre parts. GeForce cards — the same product line NVIDIA markets to gamers.
The pattern has a precedent that nobody in this story enjoys invoking. During the crypto boom, mining operations bought GeForce cards in bulk while gamers hunted for stock, and NVIDIA answered with Lite Hash Rate versions of several RTX 30 cards, which cut Ethereum mining performance while leaving gaming performance untouched. The restriction was eventually bypassed, but it held for roughly a year. The workload has changed from hashing to inference. The buying behaviour has not.
VideoCardz's own conclusion is the blunt version: "At the end of the day, the RTX 5090 is no longer a gaming card." Treat that as an opinion — the card still games, and at these prices gamers are a rounding error in unit terms — but treat the observability claim as fact. As VideoCardz puts it: "It's easy to track, each card has a serial number, but I'm yet to hear about NVIDIA preventing bulk sales to such firms." Bulk movement of serialised hardware is visible to the vendor. What is missing is any sign the vendor objects.
A precedent NVIDIA has already shipped
NVIDIA has demonstrated that it can split one card into two markets. To satisfy export rules it shipped the RTX 5090 D, rated 2,375 AI TOPS against 3,352 for the standard RTX 5090, with multi-GPU operation restricted and gaming specifications largely intact. That is a segmented product with a real performance cliff on the AI side. The mechanism exists; it has been built once already.
VideoCardz notes that the pallet photographs do not show 5090 D or V2 variants, which is the entire point: the cards going into AI servers appear to be the unrestricted standard part. A modern Lite Hash Rate equivalent would be a commercial decision rather than a technical obstacle, and VideoCardz's expectation is that NVIDIA will not make it. NVIDIA has made no public statement about allocation, pricing, or the pallet images.
What a $9,500 GPU does to the local-AI story
For anyone who runs models on desktop hardware rather than renting them from a cloud, the number that matters is not $9,659 as a gaming price. It is $9,659 as a capital-budget line item competing against every other route to inference capacity. In August, when a GIGABYTE 5090 listed at $5,099.95 on Amazon, the comparison that circulated was not another graphics card but a Mac Studio with far more unified memory — a machine that at $5,000 already looked like the saner purchase. We wrote about that repricing; the September listings have roughly doubled it.
The alternatives are getting more interesting at exactly the moment the 5090 is getting less so. A builder assembled 128GB of VRAM from four used Radeon PRO V620 cards and an EPYC 7452 for about $3,010 — a third of one marketplace 5090, with his own power and decode numbers attached. Framework's 192GB unified-memory desktop trades bandwidth for capacity, and a 510GB open-weight model is the same argument in a different register: whether the binding constraint is speed or sheer VRAM. The thread under the Tom's Hardware post makes the case more directly than any of it, and one comment is worth quoting as community opinion rather than evidence: "Go run Qwen 3.8 at q4 and q8 and honestly see if you can tell the difference let alone a $3000 difference."
What would settle it
What would settle this is not another screenshot. Three things would: an NVIDIA statement on how GeForce allocation is decided, restock data from board partners showing whether retail channels get meaningful volume before the next generation, and a decision — stated or clearly implied — on whether bulk AI purchases of the standard part will be limited. None of those exists today. The Founders Edition page still advertises $1,999, the Newegg filter still returns bundles, and the only party that could explain the allocation is the one that has said nothing.
Until then, buyers should price the card from listings rather than from specifications, and assume that any standalone card at a sane price will be gone before the page finishes loading.
